My 6th Dec 2008 Penang Trip

Yeah~ my first Penang food trip was just wonderful.. and very *full* ~ Hehehe… I might mix a little bit of Chinese here and there… cause my little niece already wrote the blog in Chinese… so I just copy paste.. and of course add a little bit of “Jialing 的味道” in here la~
This blog was just “too late” ; thanks to my sudden trip to Guangzhou just after my coming back from Penang. Went Guangzhou for one week, and finally have the time to sit down here and write about my Penang.

哎哟~~That day 大塞车啊!!Out from my house at 1pm and 大概八点多才到. Actually we ( me, my 2 bros, my sis and cousin sis Khim) wanted to check into our hotel first, but then we were already hungry and charged directly to Gurney, which took us a little time to figure out the road since we were reading the map in dark.
Gurney Hotel area…. Jam again… from Gurney Hotel to Gurney Hawker place already took us 30mins. Get to start eating only at 9pm. We went there with 2 cars, so it’s not easy to get two parking you know, especially during holiday season. The parking space also is 用来抢的!

We ordered many different food. We have asam laksa, sotong bakar (which I find it a little too dry for me), char kaoy teow, shelly stuff of food, cendol, satay babi.. and many more la.. cannot remember liow. But one thing for sure I want to say here is the Pasembur (so called rojak). The Indian man who spin and dance around with disco songs while cutting and preparing the rojak. Head shaking, butt shaking and they way he sing the “rojak… rojak…rojak” I tell you… damn funny lor! The stall was just behind me.. everytime I turn around and see his act, I just cannot stop laughing lor~ ~

This was the Rojak Pasembur Man~

We booked two different hotels, cause one was booked at the very last minute. My cousin brother and his family stayed in Traders Hotel and we stayed at Mingood Hotel. My trip is budget trip la ok. My little niece hor.. very funny lor. Got 五星级酒店don’t want to stay, come and stay at budget hotel with us! Unbelievable.

第二天一大清早we woke up early and prepare to search for our 1st food station - 姐妹炒果条. It was not far from our hotel and thanks to my brother’s navigator, we found our way. Talking about the navigator, when he first bought that navigator, he kena scolded from me for buying such expensive thing duno for what. And I kept saying that “that navigator” thing is useless one la… you no chance to use it. The road all you know liow de ma~
Mana tau, at Penang, that navigator seems to be a big help – minus the cases where many Penang road are turned to one way. Sometimes the navigator will tell us to turn left.. but actual, there is no left turning (road changed to one way). So we went merry-go-round. Aiya.. talk about navigator pulak… come back to姐妹炒果条, we went there at 8am.. therefore not many people yet. I did not know it was a small shoppie with just few tables.
It didn’t seem as busy as I expected, since it’s supposed to be famous and all – maybe it was just too early.

I always hear my colleagues say that the姐妹very [巴百] de lor. [It it said to be one of the best char koay teow in Penang, with a notorious reputation of being overpriced and arrogant.] Then I finally get to KNOW them liow. When we 1st order, we have 10 pax. So I was the one going around asking everyone… they want mee or keoy teow… want spicy or not spicy… want siham or no siham.

Then the woman heard me and talked loudly in penang hokkien “wa lang bo tang geng eh… wu keoy teow nia. Lu ka wa kong lu ai kui pua teow eh sai liow”. Translation : Here no choice one… we only have koay teow and you just need to tell me you want how many plates enough already!
We ordered our drinks and had some light kuih. The kuih not so nice lor… Then our koay teow come out liow. Wah…. RM4 for one tiny plate of white koay teow. I said white cause normally the ones I eat in Klang is black black one lor. The 炒果条really taste good. Very good and the prawn very Big and gigantic….

With the help of the *outdated navigator* and Penang map, we are able to find the Burma road and easily get to the temple. Take many photos there.

We did not know and drive straight to the top. Then only found out that we are too *high* up. Then we go lower and again we snap non-stop there…

At Joo Hui Café. The asam laksa and 炒果条is just so good! Ya.. I ate one plate of 炒果条and one bowl of asam laksa哈哈哈~ 吃完.. [Penang Road Cendol] . Don’t ask why my stomach can fill in so much.. ask the Penang people why their bowl and plate specially small lor. By the way.. are those food for children only??

After that we headed off for sightseeing. We covered the historic sites in Penang. We saw the Penang clock tower, the cannons in Fort Cornwallis, walked by the city hall and breeze through the wind near the harbour.

Guys and gals separated into two cars. The guys went for online games and we girls… Then have a sip at Coffee Bean and talk some grandmother stories.

I forgot the name, but the area is just below Hotel Sunway). Yeah.. is 猪杂粥. When my colleagues recommend me 猪杂粥, I hear the name also don’t feel like ordering but since they insist me have to try, I give it a try. The 猪肠dangling at the stall looks… eerie, but when the猪杂粥comes to our table, you can smell the fragrant liow. Put inside your mouth…
Especially the 炸肠。 The 炸肠very very nice lor. When I finished my big bowl of porridge and other side dishes, I was so full. But I still want to have more porridge, but my stomach no space liow. I thought want to tabao back to my hotel. Stand up, go to the stall… the stall tutup ledi. It was only 8pm lor!! Kua Jiong lor….We also tried the chee cheong fun Penang style. They serve with prawn paste ( 虾膏) not the normal sweet sauce in Klang. I eat until 怪怪的咯!

My brother saw the stall selling Hokkien mee, he wanted to order Hokkien mee. When he walk to the stall, he only sees the man serving prawn mee. He came back with scratched head telling me that the signboard write Hokkien mee but cook is prawn mee. It was my mistake. I forgot to tell everyone that in Penang, they name prawn mee as Hokkien mee!

After our heavy dinner, we head to Batu Ferringhi. My niece told us that the nite view there is very nice (which I tell you is bullshit lor). Besides the mini restaurant got lights and the pasar malam… there got nothing else to see lo). But still, we pass our time there, and the guys bought many DVD there too. Beach cannot see anything; cause too dark, but it was fun walking around the pasar malam for souvenior and food.

For goodness sake… look back at my blog.. morning 炒果条, afternoon 炒果条, nite 炒果条(as side dish) and supper also 炒果条. We just couldn’t have enough of it.

I woke my niece up early and we sneak out for our *hokkien mee*. As per my colleague’s hand drawn map, it’s right behind Giant supermarket. At 7.45am we reached there, saw shop also not many people yet, walk to the stall to order two bowls of Hokkien mee. The uncle told me that “ You want order 虾面 can, but have to wait one hour”. Feeling funny I thought maybe two bowls they don’t want to give us first. Then I approached him again and act cute… “老板, 我要一碗可以吗?一碗罢了” . He reply me “你要一碗还是十碗, 也要等一个小时。 我这里还要做很多碗的!”Terus no mood liow. 结果呢we ordered one bowl of laksa from other stall.

Go back to my car and get my penang food book. Not wanting to miss out Prawn Mee, we saw Jalan Perak has a famous shop for prawn mee too. This time my niece is my navigator. On the third day, we found out that actually Penang road not difficult to conquer lor. We almost know the way around the city liow. Waited for 1/2 hour for a bowl of prawn mee. And the prawn mee really very very delicious la. The soup so “prawny”!!! Slurp of the prawn mee in few mins… eat finish the bowl takes less than 5 mins, but have to sit down there wait half and hour.

过后..we gather up 全部人, and go to Anson Road for our 点心. One table of 10pax, full of dim sum , and only cost us RM98. This is the only cheap food we ate in Penang so far. Others all tiny and expensive. Hehe.吃完点心想去买些饼的, wanted to go Him Heang, but their tau saer peah need to order one day ahead.

Then we fill our tank full and head back to Klang. We ki hiao and took the small road (Tapah-Bidor-Teluk Intan-Sekinchan- Kuala Selangor). We cross Penang bridge at 11.30am… reach Klang at 8pm!! Thanks to the jam all the way from Teluk Intan right up to Kapar!

Penang really a food heaven. Thank God I’m not staying there permanently. If not, my weight will be double up lor…. Maybe triple tim.
